Fans of Barack Obama like the idea of a “Fairness Doctrine” that would crack down on talk shows like those of Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh, and their enthusiasm grows when the idea of taking those talk radio icons off the air is introduced.

According to a new ATI-News/Zogby poll, fans are at odds even with Independents and undecided voters on the issue of clamping down on free speech on the airwaves.

“Barack Obama has shown a stunning lack of tolerance for free speech throughout the course of this campaign,” said ATI-News president Brad O’Leary. “His presidency, combined with supermajorities for Democrats in Congress would almost certainly bring back the so-called ‘Fairness Doctrine’ and allow the Democrats to snuff out any broadcasters with whom they disagree.”

The new survey talked with 1,203 likely voters nationwide from Oct. 23-26, and has a margin of error of 2.9 percent.

Those likely to vote for Obama supported reinstating the “Fairness Doctrine” by a margin of 49 percent to 36 percent, and Democrats support it 47 to 38 percent. Independents marginally support the fairness doctrine 42 percent to 40 percent, though this is within the poll’s 2.9 percent margin of error. The remaining respondents all replied “not sure.”

But then the poll asked, “Some say the Fairness Doctrine could result in popular radio shows, such as Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh, to be taken off the air in some markets. Knowing this, do you support or oppose reinstatement of the Fairness Doctrine?”

The results then revealed those who say they will vote for Obama support reinstating the “Fairness Doctrine” 53 percent to 37 percent, with 10 percent not sure. That’s while Independent voters opposed the doctrine 49 to 40 percent and undecided voters rejected it 50 to 17 percent.

“When informed that the Fairness Doctrine might take Limbaugh and Hannity off the air, the percentage of Democrat likely voters who support the Fairness Doctrine rose to 53 percent,” according to O’Leary. “However, the percentage of Independents opposed to the Fairness Doctrine rose.”

The doctrine was instituted in 1949 by the Federal Communications Commission and soon was recognized as a tool for silencing views authorities found objectionable. The FCC repealed the rule in 1987 after admitting the plan “had the net effect of reducing rather than enhancing the discussion of controversial issues of public importance.”

According to O’Leary, the results show Obama and the Democrats would rather silence their detractors through oppressive regulation than compete on an even playing field.

He said several situations already have given evidence of that:

• When Chicago radio station WGN scheduled journalist Stanley Kurtz to talk about Obama’s ties to unrepentant terrorist Bill Ayers, the Obama campaign recruited 100,000 supporters to act in a cult-like manner and besiege the station with protests.
• When “Joe the Plumber” questioned Obama about his plan to raise taxes on small businesses, Obama supporters sought to destroy Joe and publicly embarrass him by digging through his tax files, work history and personal life.
• Obama forces also tried to hush a national organization that ran TV and radio ads attacking the candidate’s position on an issue. In that instance, Obama’s general counsel fired off a letter threatening the licenses of stations that didn’t pull the ad “for the sake of FCC licensing and the public interest.”
• After seeing a dip in the polls in September, the Obama campaign dispatched prosecutors and law enforcement officials in Missouri to act as so-called “truth squads” to target anyone who runs ads on TV or radio critical of Obama.

“There is nothing ‘fair’ about the Fairness Doctrine, and re-establishing the doctrine would have the chilling effect of silencing America’s 2,000 talk radio show hosts that discuss politics,” warned O’Leary.

He said if Democrats achieve supermajorities in both houses of Congress and Obama is installed in the White House, “freedom-of-speech will be purged from our nation’s airwaves.“

In a commentary about the results of the poll, O’Leary wrote that Bill Ruder, who was President Kennedy’s assistant secretary of commerce, said, “We had a massive strategy to use the ‘fairness doctrine’ to challenge and harass the right-wing broadcasters and hoped the challenge would be so costly to them that they would be inhibited and decide it was too expensive to continue.”

Obama, according to his spokesman, believes in opening the airwaves “to as many diverse viewpoints as possible.” He also supports media-ownership caps, network neutrality and more minority owners of broadcast outlets.

“While the television and newspaper industries are dominated by left-wing bias, talk radio has been the only voice for Americans to hear the other side of the story, and with overwhelming success. Today 100 million people in 50 million households tune into news and talk radio each week. There is nothing fair about the Fairness Doctrine and re-establishing the doctrine would have the chilling effect of silencing America’s 2,000 talk radio show hosts that discuss politics,” O’Leary wrote.

WND recently reported when the Colorado Springs-based family organization Focus on the Family Action published a hypothetical letter from a Christian in the 2012.

Titled “Letter from 2012 in Obama’s America,” the piece clearly targets the many evangelical Christians seeking “change,” particularly the young, who could tip the election in favor of the Illinois Democrat. At the end of the letter, the fictional Christian laments that these people “simply did not realize Obama’s far-left agenda would take away many of our freedoms as a nation, perhaps permanently,” pointing to a new, liberal-majority Supreme Court unlikely to change for 30 more years.

“I get tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat,” says the fictional writer. “Now in October of 2012, after seeing what has happened in the last four years,” America is no longer “the land of the free and the home of the brave.”

“Many of our freedoms have been taken away by a liberal Supreme Court and a majority of Democrats in both the House and the Senate, and hardly any brave citizen dares to resist the new government policies any more,” the letter writer says.

Focus on the Family Action, established as a separate legal entity from Focus on the Family, has expanded abilities under the IRS code to lobby for political change.

Among the possible developments by 2012:

• Homosexual marriage has been ruled a constitutional right that must be respected by all 50 states.
• Elementary schools have compulsory training in varieties of gender identity. Courts rule parents cannot opt out their children, because the training is deemed essential to psychological health.
• Evangelical and Catholic adoption agencies cease to exist after the Supreme Court rules they must agree to place children with homosexuals or lose their licenses.
• Church buildings are now considered a “public accommodation” by the United States Supreme Court, and churches have no freedom to refuse to allow their buildings to be used for wedding ceremonies for homosexual couples.
• Obama signed the Freedom of Choice Act, as he promised the Planned Parenthood Action Fund last year, nullifying hundreds of state laws that had created even the slightest barrier to abortion.

The letter also cites the restoration of the “Fairness Doctrine.”

As a result, “nearly all conservative stations have now gone out of business or switched to alternative formats such as country or gospel or other music. Conservative talk radio, for all intents and purposes, was shut down by the end of 2010.”

I’m changing as fast as I can!

Well, on the bright side, there were no riots in the streets following Tuesday’s election. This is good.

On the other hand, Obama got elected president. We also have a Democrat majority in the Senate. Therefore, we must prepare to “change.” This is bad.

I truly believe we are heading into one of the most divisive times in our nation’s history, and it won’t have anything to do with skin color. (How tired I am of hearing that argument.) It will have everything to do with socialism vs. free-market economics. Dependence vs. independence.

During a recent history lesson with my homeschooled daughters, we discussed some of the highlights of ancient Greek civilization and its contributions to our current culture. I told the girls about Hippocrates and the Hippocratic oath, a portion of which can be summed up as “First, do no harm.”

Maybe this could apply to the Obama administration. First, do not harm us.

Unfortunately, new presidents merely take an oath to support and defend the Constitution, and we all know how well that oath is fulfilled. So a plea to “do no harm” will undoubtedly fall on deaf ears.

By implication, we can assume that the “changes” that will be forced upon us in the next four years will harm us. More than ever before, now is the time to cultivate personal independence – or as much as you can in our fettered condition. The less you need the government, the more you weaken it. The more dependent you are on government, the more power it has.

It was Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas (1939-1975) who said, “The right to be left alone is indeed the beginning of all freedom.” Keep that in mind as you consider the following suggestions.

Prepare to hunker down. Interpret this as you will.

If you have any, hide your money – otherwise it will be spread around. The best way to spread your own wealth on your own terms is to hire people to work for you. But of course, you knew that already.

Take your kids out of public school. Schools are going to become nothing but Marxist pressure cookers. They’re already socialist indoctrination centers. Have you any idea what they’re teaching in kindergarten these days, much less high school? Better find out.

If you’re Joe the Plumber, hide. Quickly. Otherwise your life for the next four years will be a living hell. Obama supporters have demonstrated they like to retaliate, so you’re not safe.

Buy guns and ammunition. Especially ammunition. The tools necessary for self-defense and to keep our government under at least a modicum of control are going to quickly become unavailable. Perhaps not banned outright – that would cause riots – but the taxes on these tools of self-reliance will be raised so high that the effect will be the same.

Don’t surrender to guilt. Opposing the new world order coming your way is not selfish. The “best interests of all” are code words for state slavery. “From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs” is the death of liberty and the definition of Marxism. Duh.

Stockpile some resources, because it’s only a matter of time before our terrorist enemies (who are delighted with the outcome of the election) will launch something nasty our way. Terrorists love weak or untried rulers because they prefer to strike vulnerable targets. We just bared our throats.

Move. Whatever your political affiliation, it’s always best to live in a place with like-minded people. (Idaho might be worth considering.) Just make sure the place you move to has people whose concepts of liberty agree with yours.

Start looking for other news sources, because it’s very likely that your favorite conservative radio talk-show host will go out of business once the (ahem) “Fairness” Doctrine gets re-implemented.

Buy light bulbs. There is no possible way our new green president will lift the absurd imminent ban on incandescent light bulbs. Unless you want your home to look like the inside of a train station lavatory in 2012, you’d better stock up on incandescents while you can. (Obviously lights bulbs are a metaphor for all the “for your own good” changes that will be shoved upon us.)

Go to church. All the morals and values that we once cherished in this country – traditional marriage, sanctity of life, family values – are going to become so condemned that churches will be our only sanctuaries.

Strengthen your family, your community, your state. Obama has said that an economy is built from the bottom up. In that he is entirely wrong (poor people don’t hire – only rich people do that). But liberty most certainly IS built from the bottom up. Start by strengthening yourself. Next, your family. Support your neighbors. Build your community. Get involved with your state. The days of sitting on your hands must be over.

Find another job. Or preferably, several. Don’t give up your current job, of course, but as the economy continues to nosedive, it is best to cultivate your marketable skills and diversify your income sources. The more income irons you have in the fire, the better.

Never never never never trust that the upcoming administration will do anything in your best interest. If the government offers you something that seems too good to be true, assume that it is. Education, medical care, housing and other benefits are never free – they cost something down the line. And the cost is always freedom. Take warning.
Obviously this list barely scratches the surface. If you use your head, you can think of many more. But better hurry up. Change is coming, like it or not.

But the thing about “change” is that it can work both ways. The ordinary Joe Plumbers of this country can change, too – and it may not be in the direction the government will like.

The official website of President-Elect Barack Obama, Change.gov, originally announced that Obama would “require” all middle school through college students to participate in community service programs; but after a flurry of blogs protested children being drafted into Obama’s proposed youth corps, the website’s wording was softened.

Originally, under the tab “America Serves” Change.gov read, “President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in under served schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps.

“Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year,” the site announced.

The language of requiring students to serve and the creation of a “Classroom Corps” sparked a surge of criticism from bloggers for bringing back memories of the much-publicized video of marching Obama youth and Obama’s “civilian national security force,” which the candidate said in July would be just as powerful and well-funded as the U.S. military.

Gateway Pundit called Obama’s plan the “creation of his Marxist youth corps,” and DBKP commented, “‘Choosing’ to serve should be approved by parents – not required by the government. No amount of good intentions can sugar-coat words like ‘mandatory,’ ‘compulsory’ or ‘required.’”

Following the furor raised by bloggers, however, the website’s wording was changed.

The word “require” was stricken from the website yesterday, replaced with the phrase “setting a goal” and now also listing tax credits toward college tuition.

The original wording is below:

The new wording is consistent with Obama’s campaign website, which also described the college tuition tax credit and detailed “enabling” Americans to serve, rather than “requiring” them to serve.

Elsewhere on the Change.gov site, however, it still describes the plan under the heading, “Require 100 hours of service in college.”

J.D. Tuccille of the Civil Liberties Examiner also points out, “Most public schools depend on federal dollars. As Obama elaborated in a speech last December, ‘At the middle and high school level, we’ll make federal assistance conditional on school districts developing service programs, and give schools resources to offer new service opportunities’

“So, it won’t be the nasty federal government forcing your kids to donate their time to government-approved service, it’ll be the local schools – but that requirement will be among the strings attached to federal money,” Tuccille writes.

Obama’s selection of an advocate for mandatory civil service, Rahm Emanuel, as his chief of staff has further worried bloggers that Obama’s plans may be more “requirement” than “encouragement.”

In his book, “The Plan: Big Ideas for America,” Emanuel writes: “It’s time for a real Patriot Act that brings out the patriot in all of us. We propose universal civilian service for every young American. Under this plan, all Americans between the ages of 18 and 25 will be asked to serve their country by going through three months of basic training, civil defense preparation and community service.”

Tuccille comments, “Emanuel and co-author Bruce Reed insist ‘this is not a draft,’ but go on to write of young men and women, ‘the nation will enlist them for three months of civilian service.’ They also warn, ‘Some Republicans will squeal about individual freedom,’ ruling out any likelihood that they would let people opt out of universal citizen service.”

Obama has also yet to clarify what he meant during his July "Call to Service" speech in Colorado Springs, in which he insisted the U.S. "cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we've set" and needs a "civilian national security force."

Obama spokesmen have declined to return WND calls requesting an explanation of what this security force would be or whether this force would be "required" or "encouraged."

Joseph Farah, founder and editor of WND, used his daily column first to raise the issue and then to elevate it with a call to all reporters to start asking questions about it.

“If we’re going to create some kind of national police force as big, powerful and well-funded as our combined U.S. military forces, isn’t this rather a big deal?” Farah wrote. “I thought Democrats generally believed the U.S. spent too much on the military. How is it possible their candidate is seeking to create some kind of massive but secret national police force that will be even bigger than the Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force put together?

“Is Obama serious about creating some kind of domestic security force bigger and more expensive than that? If not, why did he say it? What did he mean?” Farah wrote.

His call generated intense Internet discussions.

The Blue Collar Muse blog commented, “The questions are legion and the implications of such an organization are staggering! What would it do? According to the title, it’s a civilian force so how would it go about discharging ‘national security’ issues? What are the Constitutional implications for such a group? How is this to be paid. … The statement was made in the context of youth service. Is this an organization for just the youth or are adults going to participate? How does one get away from the specter of other such ‘youth’ organizations from Nazi Germany and the former Soviet Union when talking about it?”

Michael Kinsley also commented generally on plans for enlisting America’s youth in voluntary versus required volunteerism on Time’s website: “Problem number one with grand schemes for universal voluntary public service is that they can’t be both universal and voluntary. If everybody has to do it, then it’s not voluntary, is it? And if it’s truly up to the individual, then it won’t be universal.”

‘Obama, thy kingdom come’

Obama’s campaign headquarters in Lake City, Fla., has posted a victory sign in its window stating, “To God be the glory. Great things he has done. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done.”

The sign, prominently posted in the front window, is visible from the street. Obama’s supporters have frequently referred to him as the “Messiah.”

Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, a powerful Chicago-based political figure associated with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and other long-time associates of Obama, proclaimed to a large crowd, “You are the instruments that God is going to use to bring about universal change, and that is why Barack has captured the youth. And he has involved young people in a political process that they didn’t care anything about. That’s a sign. When the Messiah speaks, the youth will hear, and the Messiah is absolutely speaking.”

“Brothers and sisters,” Farrakhan said, Barack Obama to me, is a herald of the Messiah. Barack Obama is like the trumpet that alerts you something new, something better is on the way.”

WND also previously reported a website called http://obamamessiah.blogspot.com/ “Is Barack Obama the Messiah?” captured the wave of euphoria that followed the Democratic senator’s remarkable rise.

The site is topped by an Obama quote strategically ripped from a Jan. 7 speech at Dartmouth College just before the New Hampshire Primary in which he told students, “… a light will shine through that window, a beam of light will come down upon you, you will experience an epiphany, and you will suddenly realize that you must go to the polls and vote for Obama.”

WND also revealed talk-radio host Rush Limbaugh criticized Democrats who were comparing Obama to Jesus and Gov. Sarah Palin to Pontius Pilate.

“I know Jesus Christ. I pray to Jesus Christ all the time,” said Limbaugh.” I study what Jesus Christ did and said all the time, and let me tell you something, Barack Obama, you are no Jesus Christ.”

America’s Problem: Our President or Our Pulpits?

I was a little apprehensive about waking up on Wednesday morning. After all, America had willingly elected the most liberal president in our history. As I opened one eye, I turned to my wife who was slightly more awake than I was and said, “Well, honey, we just elected a proud socialist as president and the sun still came up!” I was being a little facetious—but only a little.

For months there will be endless and minute examinations of what went wrong in this election. Conservatives will find numerous targets of blame and there will be enough people thrown under the proverbial “bus” to keep the ride bumpy for a long, long time. All of that is proper and necessary. Indeed, something went terribly wrong in the election. While continuing to vote for the sanctity of marriage in several key contests, Americans elected a president who will enthusiastically undermine that sacred union. While waving American flags and singing the national anthem—they elected someone who will probably undermine the flag and freedoms our national anthem praises. But the sun still came up. While I am deeply concerned about the future of America under the leadership of an Obama administration, I am far more concerned about another institution.

A friend of mine reminded me recently of an extremely important Biblical principle. When studying the history of God’s people you cannot escape one glaring truth—God’s people often survived poor and even evil kings. Jump into your time machine and open the door at just about any time you desire and you will find God’s people under the rule of a less than desirable government. Israel endured one evil king after another. The early church not only endured but flourished under the rule of a totally pagan and corrupt Roman civil government. Of course there was suffering and sacrifice during those regimes but God’s people survived. Here is what they could not survive: weak preaching and weak preachers! Israel suffered but survived the bad kings, but they totally self-destructed when the prophets and preachers compromised their message.

In my regular readings, I recently came across again the warnings God issued to the “shepherds” of Israel in Ezekiel 34. God reserves some of the harshest language in scripture for His prophets who compromised the message He had given them. “Thus saith the Lord God; behold, I am against the shepherds; and I will require my flock at their hand…” (v.10). God dealt with the kings (“the king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord” Prov. 21:1) and put one up and put another down. God reserved his most severe criticism for the preachers of the day, the pulpit.

As this election is diced, sliced and dissected, don’t underestimate the role of America’s pulpits in the outcome. Within the last four years the “evangelical left” has risen meteorically to a place of influence and prominence. Where evangelicals were once known for principle and conviction, under the influence of Jim Wallis and other emergent leaders—the evangelical community succumbed to compromise and a sort of “justice” that no one can define.

Pulpits that once held high the banner of the gospel, standing strong for life and the family, started preaching equality and “common good”. The Kool-Aid of “Social-Justice” was dispensed freely from fountains installed in Evangelical churches across America. The result? Hundreds of thousands of evangelical Christians marched into voting booths and pulled the lever for increased abortions, homosexual unions, socialism, loss of religious freedom and Marxism because the pulpit told them that it was okay because in doing so they would be ending poverty, homelessness and AIDS—not to mention the end of racial division and the beginning of world peace! How could Christians be so easily deceived when it is abundantly clear that socialism has never delivered anything it has promised? Look no further than the pulpit.

America can survive a bad president. America cannot survive continued compromise in her pulpits. The solution to America’s greatest need is not in the next election—but in next Sunday’s sermon.
